Yes, I saw a rated R movie. Yes, I loved it. It is my opinion that the rating system is a little wacky. I would rather my children see Slumdog Millionaire then let them watch The Dark Knight ever again. I believe Slumdog had less swearing than in a PG-13 movie, 80% less violence than in Dark Knight. If you saw Dark Knight you can't tell me you finished that movie feeling good!!!!!
It is a movie about a boy from the slums of India who goes on the Indian version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire. They think he cheated because how could an uneducated boy know all of these answers? He flashes back to moments and experiences in his life that depict how he knew the answer. There is a love story mixed in but it's touching, tender and uplifting.
My OPINION as to why it's rated R is due to the fact it show the brutal and inhumane realities of life in India. The homeless children, the religious divide and a few violent scenes (all of which were far less graphic than any PG 13 movie) cause you to hold your breath a little. But it's reality, it's a fact, it's an issue.....a crazy man dressed up like a Joker is no where near reality.
I know I'm rambling, I know I'm picking on Dark Knight but I also I know I am entitled to my own opinion. Some might say I justified my seeing a rated R movie. Who cares. I saw it and I loved it.

Slumdog was hands down the best movie I saw last year! Anyone who is deterred because of the R status (which I think is wise to use your discretion on any movie regardless of rating) is just being ridiculous because I've seen worse just on regular TV. It's raw India and it makes you so appreciative for the country we live in. Loved it!! I'm so glad you saw it.
P.s- I was dying laughing at the part when he jumps in the crapper. I think that was my favorite scene!...oh and I loved the dance they did at the end. Why doesn't our country have cool cultural dances?!
Isn't it wonderful that friends can be tolerant to one another, and even in the times where you might not see eye to eye, that you can at least respect that your friends might have differing opinions and that in no way would ever jeopardize a friendship
I'll have to rent it when it is on video. It sounds like a good movie. And no, I didn't feel good at the end of Dark Knight.
I have heard so many good things about this movie.
I am glad that Hollywood is capable of producing at least a few really GOOD movies that have a positive impact each year.
Darn on the ratings, because it sounds like one I would have liked to have seen. (I am often disappointed by what CAN be a PG movie and what gets made PG13 or R just to draw in more of the adult audiences. It is disappointing.)
And the 2 little kids they have acting as the young versions of the main actors are actual kids from the slums they pulled off the street. Instead of paying them they put them into school and set up a trust fund for when they turn 16 they get their money... How cool is that! (and best sound track so far)
